Once a Falcon, Always a Falcon

This morning, the BGSU community woke up to tragic, heartbreaking news. Five BGSU students, and members of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority, were on their way to the Detroit Airport to celebrate the end of finals and relax on their Spring Break. Little did they know that for three of them, this would be their last drive on I-75, their last beginning to a spring break, and most importantly, their last few moments with their sorority sisters whom they hold a special bond and friendship with.

At this point, it is unknown if acohol was related, but a woman driver was trying to head south on I-75 but instead, started to head south in the northbound lanes. A few 9-1-1 calls were made from multiple concerned drivers who not only witnessed the car heading straight for them but luckily dodged the car and possibly even death.

State troopers were searching for the driver but unfortunately could not locate it until after the fatal accident was reported.

Here is what I have to say about this. I have never been so proud to be a BGSU alumnus. The students, The Greek Community, and the entire Bowling Green community  as a whole, literally is one big family. There has been so much sadness and devastation the past few months for students at BGSU, and instead of these accidents and incidents tearing us apart, it brings us, if anything, closer together.

The actual Falcon bird, is described as a bird that was designed for purpose. It's qualities are so unique that it stands out from so many other species of birds. It has thin tapered wings, which enable them to fly at high speed and to change direction rapidly. It has exceptional powers of vision; where the visual acuity of one species has been measured at 2.6 times that of a normal human. This bird, was built by God to be a fighter. Which is exactly what we are at BGSU. We. Are. Fighters. When you enroll as a falcon, you enroll into a lifestyle of purpose. A lifestyle of fighting till the end. A lifestyle of "birds of a feather, flock together".

We mourn the loss of three wonderful, smart, beautiful women today. Rebekkah Blakkolb, Christina Goyett, and Sarah Hammond, you all should know that God is the lucky one today. He has gained three lovely angels.

We pray for the women who are still alive but in critical condition. Angelica Mormile and Kayla Somoles, you are fighters. Every BGSU Falcon has a fight in them and you have the love and support from so many.

To the ladies of Alpha Xi Delta and everyone else who has been deeply affected by this, the whole entire Greek Community and Bowling Green community are here for you, pray for you, and stand behind you.

Sometimes life just can't be explained. All because of one person's lack of responsibility, the lives of three have been taken way too early from us. Let this be a lesson learned. Never bully anyone, never treat anyone like they're less than you, overuse "I Love You", and always live to your fullest potential... because any day could be your last.

Life is too damn short.
